Fuel your body

What I have noticed, and definitely like to see, is that there is a growing awareness of the need to feed your body the fuel it needs to perform. I know, it’s been around forever – sportsnutrition is definitely not a new phenomenon and no, I am not so old that I have forgotten that! But even though I have been around in the sports world for 25 years (and a bit more), it strikes me that now, finally, even the average person is starting to understand that food does make a huge difference. The old adage “you are what you eat” is still one of the golden ones – not only does food influence your weight, but your health, your propensity to certain illnesses, your mental alertness and brain functions.

More and more I hear models claim that they eat certain foods because they help them stay healthy, not necessarily just thin. And this is now beginning to be translated by some early adopters in the fitness industry to offering their clientele the right foods, pre or post-work out.

In San Francisco’s Equinox, the club I like to train at when I am there – the cafe was recently re-opened and is now called the Fuel Cafe. Led by Corey Syverson, he and a fellow believer (and professor of sports nutrition) have created meals that stimulate the effects of the work-outs you go to do there. Food for your muscles, drinks that stimulate healthy metabolism, smoothies that help your mind concentrate the rest of the day. I love this trend of providing healthy foods and choices that not only are good for you but taste great too.

Long may it continue!
