So from time to time, I am inspired to write not just about my own love of sports and keeping fit and healthy, but about the journey someone else takes.
I have this great friend, Roddy, that when we used to work together, would always be on the verge of starting a fitness regime. We’d travel around Europe together on business and he would “maybe” join me in the gym in the morning, or “almost” go on a run with me at 5am..but never quite make it. So we joked about it, and I teased him with his inability to get himself going… until a couple of years ago. Roddy sent me this little message that said he was doing a charity run – I thought when I read it first that he meant he was doing a local 5k run for something, but no, he tackled things in amazing fashion – and did the 7Edges run, a gruelling 20 miler over the Peaks in northern England. After that he swore he’d never run again…but then completed the Florence Marathon in less then 4 hours only a few months later. I love his spirit in this whole thing, he’s found that doing something for charity pushes him off that couch and on to the road, in a big way.
Now he’s doing another major challenge, cycling from Zurich in Switzerland to Venice in Italy, over 5 days covering 420 miles…and I think most of them will be uphill!! It’s an amazing venture, and again, it’s all about charity – Multiple Sclerosis this time.
Two actions for all of you out there that read this -
One: help Roddy’s charity gain more funding – donations via: http://www.zurich2venice.com/
Two: Find your own inspiration, look for a charity or anything that makes YOU get out there and start on a healthy regime. Just think of all those people that will benefit from Roddy’s efforts… wouldn’t you like yours to count for something?
